WISDOM: THE DIVINE GIFT AND HEAVENLY TREASURE

Introduction

In the pages of the King James Bible, wisdom stands as a pearl of great price, a divine attribute that God freely bestows upon those who earnestly seek it.

The Origin of Wisdom

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10)

True wisdom begins not with human intellect but with reverential fear of the Almighty. This foundational truth establishes wisdom's divine origin.

Wisdom Personified

Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words... (Proverbs 1:20-21)

In Proverbs, wisdom is dramatically personified as a woman calling out to all who will hear. She stands in public places, offering guidance to those who will heed her voice.

The Value of Wisdom

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. (Proverbs 3:13-14)

Scripture repeatedly emphasizes wisdom's surpassing worth, placing it above material wealth and earthly treasures.

Solomon's Example

Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? (1 Kings 3:9)

When offered anything he desired, Solomon chose wisdom above riches or long life, pleasing God with his priority.

The Characteristics of Wisdom

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. (James 3:17)

Divine wisdom manifests in godly character and righteous behavior, distinct from worldly wisdom.

Seeking Wisdom

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. (James 1:5)

God promises wisdom to all who seek it in faith, making it available through prayer and supplication.

Wisdom's Protection

When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee. (Proverbs 2:10-11)

Wisdom serves as a guardian, protecting those who embrace it from life's pitfalls and spiritual dangers.

Christ as Wisdom

But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption. (1 Corinthians 1:30)

Ultimate wisdom is found in Christ Himself, who embodies divine wisdom for believers.

Practical Application

Conclusion

Biblical wisdom represents far more than mere knowledge or understanding. It is a divine gift, a protective guide, and ultimately a person - Christ Himself. As believers seek and apply this wisdom, they walk in the light of God's truth and find direction for life's journey.

Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. (Proverbs 4:7)
