Biblical Virtues
This is a listing of desirable virtues that all Christians should strive to attain.
Love (Charity)
Selfless, unconditional affection and care for others. It is patient, kind, and seeks the good of others above oneself. Love is the foundation of all other virtues.
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. (1 Corinthians 13:13)
Joy
Deep-seated gladness and contentment, regardless of circumstances. It's a spiritual attribute that comes from a relationship with God, not dependent on external factors.
Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. (Philippians 4:4)
Peace
Inner calmness and harmony, both with God and others. It's a tranquility that surpasses human understanding and guards the heart and mind.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7)
Longsuffering (Patience)
Endurance under difficult circumstances; forbearance. It's the ability to remain steadfast and persevere through trials without giving up.
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, (Hebrews 12:1)
Gentleness (Kindness)
Considerate and mild in disposition; benevolence in action. It involves treating others with care and respect, showing tenderness in dealings.
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. (Ephesians 4:32)
Goodness
Moral excellence and virtue; the quality of being good. It's an active pursuit of what is right and beneficial to others.
For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth; (Ephesians 5:9)
Faith
Trust and confidence in God; loyalty to one's beliefs. It's the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)
Meekness
Humble patience; gentleness of spirit. It's strength under control, not weakness.
But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. (Psalm 37:11)
Temperance
Self-control; moderation in action, thought, or feeling. It's the ability to restrain oneself from excesses and maintain balance.
But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. (Romans 13:14)
Virtue
Moral excellence; goodness. It encompasses all aspects of righteous character and behavior.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Philippians 4:8)
Knowledge
Understanding and insight, particularly of spiritual matters. It involves growing in understanding of God and His ways.
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. (2 Peter 3:18)
Godliness
Reverence and respect for God; living according to His will. It's a life oriented towards pleasing God in all aspects.
Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. (2 Corinthians 7:1)
Brotherly Kindness
Affection and care for fellow believers. It's the special love and bond shared among Christians.
Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; (Romans 12:10)
Mercy
Compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone, especially when it's within one's power to punish or harm. It reflects God's character towards us.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Matthew 5:7)
Humbleness of Mind
Modesty; freedom from pride or arrogance. It's a proper estimation of oneself in relation to God and others.
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. (Philippians 2:3)
Forbearance
Patient self-control; restraint and tolerance. It's the ability to hold back, especially when provoked.
With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; (Ephesians 4:2)
Forgiveness
The act of pardoning an offense or ceasing to feel resentment. It's releasing others from the debt of their wrongs against us.
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. (Ephesians 4:32)
Honesty
Truthfulness and sincerity in actions and speech. It involves integrity and uprightness in all dealings.
Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. (2 Corinthians 8:21)
Justice
Fairness and righteousness in action or treatment. It involves treating others equitably and standing for what is right.
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? (Micah 6:8)
Purity
Freedom from moral corruption or contamination. It involves cleanliness of heart, mind, and actions.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. (Matthew 5:8)
Loveliness
The quality of being morally or spiritually attractive. It refers to things that are admirable and praiseworthy.
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer. (Psalm 19:14)
Good Report
Having a good reputation; being well-spoken of. It involves living in a way that brings honor to God and respect from others.
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. (Proverbs 22:1)
Wisdom
The quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment. It's the ability to apply spiritual understanding to daily life.
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. (James 1:5)
Easy to be Entreated
Approachable; willing to listen and respond to requests or ideas. It involves being open to correction and counsel.
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. (James 3:17)
Impartiality
Treating all equally; free from bias or favoritism. It reflects God's character of not showing partiality.
For there is no respect of persons with God. (Romans 2:11)
Sincerity
The absence of deceit or hypocrisy; genuineness. It involves acting with pure motives and authenticity.
Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. (Romans 12:9)
Unbiblical Faults
This list provides a comprehensive overview of various unbiblical faults or vices as described in the King James Version of the Bible. Each of these represents a departure from the virtues and character traits that the Bible encourages believers to cultivate.
Lasciviousness
Unbridled sensuality; lewd or lustful behavior. It refers to a lack of moral restraint, especially in sexual conduct.
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, (Galatians 5:19)
Pride
Excessive self-esteem; conceit. It's an inflated view of one's own importance, often leading to arrogance and a disregard for others.
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18)
Envy
Discontent or resentful longing aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities, or luck.
For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. (James 3:16)
Wrath
Extreme anger; rage. It often leads to vengeful or destructive behavior.
Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: (Ephesians 4:31)
Gluttony
Excessive eating or drinking; overindulgence. It represents a lack of self-control in consumption.
For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. (Proverbs 23:21)
Sloth
Laziness; reluctance to work or make an effort. It's a spiritual apathy that neglects responsibilities.
The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. (Proverbs 13:4)
Greed
Intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth or power.
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. (1 Timothy 6:10)
Deceit
The action or practice of deceiving someone by concealing or misrepresenting the truth.
Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight. (Proverbs 12:22)
Malice
The intention or desire to do evil; ill will.
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, (1 Peter 2:1)
Idolatry
The worship of idols or excessive devotion to, or reverence for, some person or thing.
Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. (1 John 5:21)
Blasphemy
The act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God.
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. (Colossians 3:8)
Hypocrisy
The practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. (Matthew 23:27)
Strife
Angry or bitter disagreement over fundamental issues; conflict.
For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? (1 Corinthians 3:3)
Faithlessness
Lack of faith or loyalty; not adhering to promises or vows.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God, and humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the LORD. (2 Chronicles 36:12)
Selfishness
Lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure.
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. (Philippians 2:3)
